Year 2. The early years, those prior to the JRC moving to NZ, have a somewhat hazy history. Weirdly, we thought we were golfers. There was very little on-course boozing, almost like we thought we were golfers. We weren't. What we were good at (and still are) is boozing and partying with the lads. We lit Wales up. So many good memories of Cardiff. Not least the Awards Ceremony being held in the grounds of Cardiff Castle. Festivities went on for so long that we got locked in and to scale the walls to make our escape.
Wales also started a couple of great trends for the JP Cup. First of which was of amazing weather. We often joke that if you are going to get married, you should do it on a JR weekend as you'll always have good weather. There was suburnt calves, heatstroke and 36 holes on what must surely have been the hottest day in Wales' history. So good. The second trend, which didn't last quite as long was the addition of an impact squad and whilst this only lasted a couple of years, the impact in Cardiff was amazing and should never be forgotten.
Golf Courses
We played Ashburnham Golf Club, Pennard Golf Club (which will be remembered for its punishing bunkers and Damo famously making a 14 on his way to 109, lol) and Cottrell Park Golf Club.
The Jesse Ryder Cup
Again, recollection of how things unfolded are somewhat hazy, but we believe that the South of the Rakaia beat the North of the Rakaia in what was no doubt a great battle.
The Gold Jacket
Was taken out by JP Mulvey. The highball tactic finally paid dividends for one of our most enthusiastic members. It was an exciting climax to the Gold Jacket battle, with JPM and Aussie Rob tied after 54 holes. Forced into a dramatic playoff - sent back to the 100 yard marker on the 18th fairway with water in front of the green. Aussie Rob up first, with the green flanked by the rest of the boys, watching in anticipation. The big leftie steps up, eyes up the challenge in front, and proceeds to chunk it 30 yards straight into the water. Absolute scenes.
