The JRC Abroad

2011 - the year the Jesse Ryder Cup was born.

I'd love to be able to say that things went smoothly and the JRC was brought into this world via one of the great golfing weekends knows to man.  It is true, in part, as there was golf played and many a lager was consumed, however not everything went according to plan.

The idea was to make the trip to Scotland and play a Ryder Cup style tournament of New Zealand v England.  We made the trip up there and ensured we kept things pretty well behaved the night before the first round in order to make our golf something less than terrible.  Upon arriving at the course the next morning, there was no sign of our English opposition.  We waited a while and finally a car load of them turned up, but they were in a hell of a state.  One of them vomitted out of the door in the carpark and the others looked like they weren't far behind.  So we left them there.  We went and played golf.  They didn't.

With the plan turned on its head, we basically just played golf - there were no teams, no closest to the pin, no trophy, no jacket, no nothing.  What an underwhelming beginning!

In spite of the plan losing shape, we still had a hell of a good time.  Partying at Fat Rats house, staying in some classic Scottish accommodation and making general nusances of ourselves meant all was not lost.  Legend has it that along with the incredible awards ceremony, the associated, golf "sweepie" was also born in the midst of an Endirburgh cake baking competition.  This off-course form has continued in every JRC since the birth and now helps to define what the Jesse Ryder Cup is.
